A family-run working ranch with a main house dating back to 1880, built for General Pablo Riccheri. Since 1993 the family has opened the estancia to guests, keeping the pace and customs of country life: wide open fields, horses, an ombú tree for shade and long lunches outdoors.
The most intimate of the three, near the village of Duggan. Once a thoroughbred horse farm, El Milagro is still home to the Pisanú family, and its gauchos come from Areco and Duggan. The day centres on the matera, a traditional adobe-and-thatch shelter where gauchos gather around the fire for mate, asado and conversation, and on the little white chapel among the trees.
One of Argentina's oldest estancias, and the most refined of the three. Its red colonial buildings began in the early 1800s as a posthouse on the Camino Real, the royal road north from Buenos Aires, where stagecoach travellers rested under gaucho guard. The lookout tower was added later, when it became a working ranch. In 1986 it was one of the first estancias to open to visitors, and today it is a boutique estancia with polo-inspired interiors and a member of Relais & Châteaux. Guests arrive along an avenue of century-old plane trees.
